Department Summary

San José State University’s Department of Art and Art History is seeking part‑time sculpture faculty with expertise in one or more areas: three‑dimensional design, metal casting, welding, mold making, woodworking, mixed‑media sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewelry/metalsmithing, robotics, electronics, interactive sculpture, installation art, and CNC‑based fabrication.

The successful candidate will teach courses within a dynamic department that encourages cross‑disciplinary practice. Applicants should have a contemporary, experimental art practice and a desire to contribute to curriculum development. The Spatial Art program is known for its fabrication facilities and breadth of sculptural media.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a diverse student population—including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Ensure all classes are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned (async, sync, bi‑chronous, in‑person, or hybrid).
Required Qualifications
  • Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture or a related field.
  • Clear demonstration of artistic achievement evidenced by a record of national or international exhibitions.
  • Teaching experience at the university level.
  • Exceptional technical and fabrication skills, along with comprehensive knowledge of equipment and material safety issues.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to direct and assess student writing within a studio class.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.
  • Address the needs of a student population of great diversity through course materials, teaching strategies, and/or advisement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments; interest in interdisciplinary collaboration within the department.
  • Significant portfolio of creative work with research interests in emerging areas of artistic practice, theory, and the changing roles of technology and craft in the art world.
Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience.

Anticipated starting salary (monthly):

  • L-A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
  • L-B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
  • L-C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
  • L-D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347

Rates above are monthly salaries for full‑time academic‑year faculty; part‑time rates are prorated. There are six monthly payments per semester. See Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.
