The Department of History at San Jose State University offers a vibrant academic environment for undergraduate and graduate students. The department seeks qualified History instructors to teach lower-division survey courses and occasional upper-division courses.
Responsibilities- Teach the assigned U.S. History courses (HIST 15: Essentials of U.S. History; HIST 170S: American Identities & Institutions) on a part‑time, temporary basis.
- Prepare and deliver fully compliant syllabi, conduct scheduled class sessions, and meet with students as required.
- Use Canvas Learning Management System for all course activities, including class notes, assignments, and assessments.
- Create inclusive course materials and teaching strategies that address the diverse needs of the student population.
- Maintain accurate student records (enrollment, attendance, grades, assessment data) and attend required faculty and college meetings.
- Ensure all classes are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester, in the mode assigned.
- MA or PhD in U.S. History.
- Minimum one year of U.S. History teaching experience at the post‑secondary level.
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural student body.
- Ph.D. in U.S. History (required for HIST 170S).
- Experience working with the Canvas LMS.
Compensation is based on qualifications and experience. Anticipated monthly salary ranges for full‑time faculty are:
- L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
- L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
- L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
- L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347
