The Support Staff assists the classroom teacher in implementing positive student behavior management techniques and procedures. The Support Staff provides academic support for students under the supervision and direction of the teacher on a daily basis. This position works closely with the teacher, the Clinical Manager, the Behavior Interventionist, and Counseling Interns to address educational, behavioral, and emotional needs of the students and to advance the successful accomplishment of students’ Individual Education Plans.

• 1. Provide in‑classroom behavior management and academic support to the classroom teacher by evaluating, monitoring, and managing students’ actions to ensure they are behaviorally available to participate in lessons.
• 2. Perform problem solving with students through coaching, mentoring, and disciplining according to procedures set by the classroom teacher.
• 3. Respond to and de‑escalate crisis situations in the classroom by mediating conflicts and teaching healthy conflict‑resolution skills to students.
• 4. Physically intervene with aggressive students in prescribed situations as detailed in Day School policy (including restraining, escorting, lifting, or other actions to maintain eye contact).
• 5. Call the Behavioral Interventionist when a student’s behavior is disruptive or physically threatening and cannot be managed in‑class.
• 6. Meet regularly with the Behavioral Interventionist to discuss current behavior‑management policy, industry trends, and best practices.
• 7. Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
• 8. Act as classroom caretaker during the teacher’s temporary absence to ensure the lesson plan is followed.
• 9. Under the teacher’s direction, present subject matter using lecture, discussion, and supervised role‑playing techniques.
• 10. Perform daily school‑entrance gate coverage for student arrivals and departures.
• 11. Procure and distribute behavior incentives and rewards for students.
• 12. Maintain classroom and student documentation and records as requested by the teacher.
• 13. Attend staff meetings, IEP meetings, clinical behavioral meetings, training sessions, and retreats as requested by the teacher or principal.
• 14. Participate in field trips and graduation exercises upon request.
• 15. Take on other related duties as needed within the scope of the position.

• Effective communication skills to interact with students.
• High observance and ability to use auditory and visual cues for proactive intervention.
• Working knowledge of current student behavior‑management techniques and practices in special education environments.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.

• High school diploma required; a four‑year college degree preferred (education or child psychology).
• Completion of Crisis Prevention & Intervention Training (Handle With Care) within the first two weeks of employment.

• Effectively communicate.
• Use a computer and telephone.
• Read and compose documents.
• Lift and move at least 70 lbs.
• Physically participate in approved hand‑on behavioral management techniques when necessary.
• Some local travel may be required.
