Full-time, 100% FTE, Temporary, One Year Categorical, Non-tenured (11 months, August – June) position as Counselor, EOPS/CARE in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Dean of Student Services or area administrator, the EOPS/CARE Counselor provides academic, career, personal, and crisis counseling; assists with course placement; develops educational plans; guides students through general education and transfer coursework; implements an academic progress report; manages caseload and follow‑up; and facilitates support for EOPS/CARE students' success. Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities, and some workdays may be outside the eleven‑month academic calendar.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide academic, vocational, career, and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new, and continuing EOPS/CARE students.

Work with the EOPS/CARE caseload to develop abbreviated and comprehensive educational plans that meet EOPS requirements.

Provide intake and orientation, program advisement, follow‑up services, and group or individual counseling; assist students with textbook loans, childcare, transportation, etc., to ensure academic success. Participate in the development and offering of professional growth activities for CARE students.

Assist students with early (priority registration) enrollment each term; refer to appropriate community agencies or services for educational, career, or personal concerns.

Help EOPS/CARE students make decisions related to career choice and educational planning, including testing and vocational counseling in accordance with CARE, TANF/GAIN county, state and federal policies and regulations.

Apply knowledge to educate students and advocate on their behalf with county and community service providers.

Participate in program outreach to social services agencies and the community for recruitment and collaboration.

Develop effective working relationships with faculty in instructional areas and with SAS (DSPS), Financial Aid, ALMA/SS, Next Up/Guardian Scholars, and Veterans Resource Center to collaborate on service delivery.

Assist with development of CARE related publications and presentation of workshops/course materials/SLOs/program review.

Teach courses in the assigned discipline.

Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including participation in conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research, publishing, and statewide committees.

Show sensitivity when working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Participate in faculty responsibilities such as course and curriculum development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, committees, research, and special projects.

Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings; maintain posted office hours.

Meet record‑keeping obligations on time (grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, requisitions).

Maintain current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

Foster a professional work and learning environment.

Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, or Career Development, or equivalent.
For EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987: at least nine semester units of college coursework or equivalent related to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; or at least six units or equivalent of a college‑level counseling practicum/field‑work courses in a community college EOPS program.
Plus at least two years of occupational experience related to ethnic minorities or disadvantaged populations.
