Overview

The Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, offers BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees. It emphasizes contemporary and new media art education.

Responsibilities

Teach upper‑division undergraduate survey courses focusing on the History of Contemporary and New Media Art since 1960. May teach lower‑division general education courses in Art History and Visual Culture. Contribute to a dynamic department that encourages cross‑disciplinary practice between studio art and contemporary art criticism. Engage with recent debates in new media and contemporary art practices, and address the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Participate in 1‑2 faculty meetings per semester and provide assessment data and information to the department.

  • Demonstrate awareness and address the needs of a student population of great diversity – age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Ensure all classes meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule (asynchronous, synchronous, bimodal, in‑person, or hybrid).
Qualifications

Ph.D. in art history or an equivalent field and university‑level teaching experience, strong writing skills and the ability to direct and assess student writing, scholarly engagement in the area of design history evidenced by presentation and publication. Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.

Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary (monthly rates for full‑time academic‑year faculty):

  • L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507–$5,959
  • L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221–$7,481
  • L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825–$9,431
  • L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593–$10,347

Part‑time rates are prorated. There are six monthly payments per semester.

Employment Conditions

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned, including prevention of discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, health and safety, and Clery Act compliance. Faculty will be subject to ongoing review for campus security authority designation.
