The Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, offers BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). ResponsibilitiesThe Department of Art and Art History at San José State University is seeking part-time Pictorial faculty to run rigorous skill-based courses, encourage critical thinking, and support iterative concept development for various levels of course offerings. The appointee will teach a broad range of courses in the Pictorial Art area, including but not limited to:
- Two-Dimensional Design, Color, Beginning and Representational Drawing, Expressive and Advanced Drawing, Beginning through Advanced Painting, and possibly Life Drawing and Figure Painting, as well as some aspects of printmaking.
- Familiarity with digital processes is desirable.
- May share curriculum development and graduate and undergraduate student review responsibilities in addition to regular teaching assignments.
- Show awareness and experience in meeting the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
- Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Offer all classes as scheduled throughout the semester or term in the mode listed (asynchronous, synchronous, bi-chronous, in-person, or hybrid).
- Terminal Degree (MFA).
- Two years of university-level teaching experience in 2-D fundamentals, drawing, painting, or printmaking.
- A pictorial arts background with the ability to teach a wide variety of two-dimensional courses, including dry and wet drawing mediums and oil and watercolor painting.
- Demonstrated ability to teach all levels of 2-D classes with strong visual, analytical, and communication skills.
- Understanding of perceptually based drawing and painting, concerns of process-oriented abstraction, painting and drawing in the expanded field, and familiarity with digital pictorial processes.
- Aware of and sensitive to the educational goals of a multicultural population, as gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or related experience.
- University-level teaching experience with two years of painting and drawing and/or printmaking at the university level.
Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated salary ranges are listed as follows: L-A Range 2 - $5,507 to $5,959; L-B Range 3 - $6,221 to $7,481; L-C Range 4 - $6,825 to $9,431; L-D Range 5 - $8,593 to $10,347. Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate for full-time AY faculty; part-time rates are prorated.
