Academic Advisor

The Academic Advisor supports the academic success, retention, engagement, and timely graduation of upper-division undergraduate students within the Success Centers. Working under general supervision, the incumbent provides holistic academic advising, success coaching, and case management support to help students navigate academic requirements, university policies, and campus resources. The position builds strong relationships with students, monitors academic progress, implements timely interventions, and advocates for student needs to promote persistence and degree completion.

This role contributes significantly to student success initiatives through proactive outreach, programming, and participation in college and university-wide student support efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic advising and success coaching to upper-division undergraduate students
  • Advise students individually and in groups regarding degree requirements, graduation processes, academic policies, and major-related procedures
  • Develop and maintain ongoing case management relationships through regular meetings, documentation, progress tracking, and assessment
  • Guide students in establishing educational goals and developing academic plans aligned with university requirements
  • Introduce students to academic planning tools, degree progress resources, and campus support services
  • Monitor student academic performance using early-alert and student success systems and implement timely interventions when needed
  • Assist students in navigating university and college processes, including petitions, schedule changes, academic notices, and special accommodations
  • Design and implement student success programming that promotes academic skills, effective communication, growth mindset, and college transition success
  • Develop and execute communication strategies that support student engagement and awareness of key deadlines, resources, and events
  • Participate in orientation programs and college-wide initiatives that advance student retention, engagement, and academic achievement

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of academic advising principles, student development theory, retention strategies, and student success best practices
  • Knowledge of university policies, degree requirements, graduation procedures, change-of-major processes, and FERPA regulations
  • Ability to establish trust and build effective relationships with diverse student populations
  • Strong advising, active listening, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and customer service communication skills
  • Ability to interpret complex policies and communicate information clearly to students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to apply equitable, inclusive, and student-centered advising practices
  • Proficiency with student information systems, advising platforms, and standard office technology applications
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain documentation, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in educational counseling or a related field.
  • Experience working with students or youth in an educational, advising, counseling, or support capacity (K–12, post-secondary, or community-based settings).
  • Experience implementing strategies or providing services that support student persistence and academic progress.

Classification:
Student Services Professional II Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,250/month CSU Salary Range: $5,083/month - $ 7,228/month San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
