Position Description

The Department of Psychology at San José State University is seeking an Assistant Professor in Biological Psychology (area open) beginning in August 2027. The candidate should be a biological psychologist with a strong track record of teaching and student‑involved research. Proficiency with human psycho-physiological research methods (e.g., EEG, skin conductance, heart rate variability, pupillometry, or hormonal assays) and modern data analytics tools (e.g., Python or R libraries) is highly valued.

The department offers a BA in Psychology, MA in Research and Experimental Psychology, MS in Clinical Psychology, and MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The campus is located in Silicon Valley.

Faculty are expected to develop inclusive, student‑centered teaching and research, and to contribute to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom and research environment.

Required Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis on Biological or Physiological Psychology (or closely related field such as Cognitive Neuroscience) by date of appointment.
  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity and a strong research agenda in Biological Psychology.
  • Proficiency with experimental research methods used in Biological or Physiological Psychology.
  • Commitment to, and demonstrated potential for, teaching and mentoring excellence at the undergraduate level and within the MA program.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial atmosphere of shared governance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching Biological Psychology, Physiological Psychology, and/or Neuroscience.
  • Proficiency with human psycho-physiological research methods such as EEG, periphery psychophysiology, or hormonal assays.

    Note:

    the department does not have animal or neuroimaging facilities.
  • Proficiency with modern data analytics tools such as machine learning libraries in Python or R.
  • Commitment to seeking external funding to support research and student learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate coursework in biological psychology (e.g., introductory psychobiology, neuroscience, drugs, brain, and behavior) and in the candidate’s area of specialization, plus undergraduate service courses as needed.
  • Develop a program of research in biological psychology and pursue internal and external funding.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students of diverse backgrounds in conducting research.
  • Participate actively in the MA in Research and Experimental Psychology graduate program, including mentoring, advising, instructional responsibilities, and committee service.
  • Engage in shared governance through departmental, college, and university committees and service assignments.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and experience in meeting the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advising.
Other Duties

Faculty are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083, Clery Act training, and campus security requirements. Additional safety and compliance training is required per role.
