POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE Temporary, One Year, Categorical, Non-tenured (11 Months, August – June) as Counselor, EOPS / CARE in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation located at San Jose City College. Under the direction and supervision of the Dean of Student Services or area administrator, the EOPS / CARE Counselor provides academic, career, personal, and crisis counseling;

assists with course placement; develops educational plans; guides students through general education, and transfer coursework; implements an academic progress report, caseload management, and follow-up process; facilitates support for the EOPS / CARE students’ success. Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities. Some workdays may be assigned outside the eleven-month academic calendar. This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide academic, vocational, career and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new and continuing students in EOPS / CARE students.
  • Work with EOPS / CARE student caseload to develop abbreviated and comprehensive educational plans to meet EOPS requirements.
  • Provide intake and orientation, program advisement, follow up services, and group or individual counseling services for EOPS / CARE students. Assist students with identifying, addressing and resolving issues with textbook loans, childcare and transportation, etc. as appropriate to ensure students’ academic success. Participate in developing and offering professional growth activities for CARE student caseload.
  • Assist students with early (priority registration) enrollment each term, seeking referral to appropriate community agencies or services in response to educational, career, and/or personal concerns.
  • Assist EOPS / CARE students in making decisions relative to career choice and educational planning, including appropriate testing and vocational counseling in accordance with CARE , TANF / GAIN county, state and federal policies and regulations.
  • Apply knowledge base as a tool for educating students and advocating on their behalf with county and community-based service providers.
  • Participate, as appropriate, in program outreach to social services agencies and the community for recruitment and collaboration to maintain supportive services for CARE students.
  • Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in instructional areas and work closely with SAS ( DSPS ), Financial Aid, ALMASS , Next Up/Guardian Scholars, and Veterans Resource Center to collaborate on delivery of services with mutual student populations.
  • Assist with the development of CARE related publications and presentation of workshops/course materials/SLOs/Program Review.
  • Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.
  • Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
