Department Summary

The Department of Applied Data Science offers academic programs to address emerging workforce demands for interdisciplinary talent designing and deploying intelligent solutions to real‑world data challenges. Students acquire a comprehensive understanding of the principles, methodologies, and technologies of data science. The department continuously seeks guidance from leading data professionals and companies to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant for growing talent in the Silicon Valley region.

Brief

Description of Duties

Lecturers are expected to teach their courses effectively, maintain appropriate office hours in accordance with University Policy, and cooperate with the department in the peer‑review process. Lecturers are strongly encouraged to seek guidance from the Department Chair for clarification of University policies and department practices with respect to grading, testing, textbooks, office hours, curriculum goals, disability accommodations, academic integrity, etc.

All faculty must organize their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and ensure that all courses are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term in the mode assigned (asynchronous, synchronous, bi‑chronous, in‑person, or hybrid). Faculty shall also be mindful of a student population of diverse cultural, economic, and linguistic backgrounds, and must incorporate inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Required Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree with at least 5 years of significant and relevant professional experience in a STEM field.
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of Data Science and Analytics.
  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.
Conditional Appointment

Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and is subject to the order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association. The “Order of Work” dictates that courses must first be assigned to tenure‑line faculty, followed by new lecturer appointees.

Compensation

Compensation and salary placement are based on qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary (monthly, full‑time academic year) is as follows:

  • L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
  • L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
  • L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
  • L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347

Employment Conditions

Faculty must complete CSU employee training as required, including prevention of discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, and health and safety. Faculty in this position will be subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and the Campus Crime Statistics Act. Campus Security Authorities must report Clery incidents immediately and complete required Clery Act training.
