Brief Description of DutiesThe Department of Art and Art History at San José State University is searching for part‑time Pictorial faculty to run rigorous skill‑based courses, encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development for various levels of our course offerings. Candidates should have an active, contemporary art practice and a desire to contribute to curriculum development.
- Teach courses in the Pictorial Art area, including Two‑Dimensional Design, Color, Beginning and Representational Drawing, Expressive and Advanced Drawing, Beginning through Advanced Painting, Life Drawing, Figure Painting, and aspects of printmaking.
- Possibly incorporate digital processes.
- Assist with curriculum development and review of graduate and undergraduate student work.
- Demonstrate awareness and experience addressing the needs of a diverse student population across age, ability, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation.
- Manage courses using the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Ensure all classes meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, bi‑chronous, in‑person, or hybrid).
- Terminal Degree (MFA).
- Two years of university‑level teaching in 2‑D fundamentals, drawing, painting, or printmaking.
- Pictorial arts background with proficiency in dry and wet drawing media, oil and water‑based painting, including watercolor.
- Ability to teach all levels of 2‑D classes with strong visual, analytical, and communication skills.
- Understanding of perceptually based drawing and painting, process‑oriented abstraction, and familiarity with digital pictorial processes.
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural student population.
- Teaching experience at the university level with at least two years in Painting, Drawing, or Printmaking.
Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary (monthly, full‑time equivalent rate):
- L‑A / Range 2: $5,507 - $5,959
- L‑B / Range 3: $6,221 - $7,481
- L‑C / Range 4: $6,825 - $9,431
- L‑D / Range 5: $8,593 - $10,347
Part‑time rates are prorated for the contracted teaching load.
