Instructional Assistant - Intervention

Under the direction of an assigned Principal, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing math, reading, writing and literacy instruction to identified individual or small groups of students; assist in the preparation of instructional materials; provide routine clerical support.

Responsible To and Evaluated By:
Principal with input from classroom teacher(s)

Examples of Essential Duties:

  • Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing math, reading, writing and literacy instruction to identified individual or small group students in a classroom or other learning environment; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects.
  • Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; ensure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, copying and filing instructional materials; prepare and maintain logs, charts and student records.
  • Explain and ensure student understanding of classroom assignment and homework instructions; explain words and concepts as necessary; assist students with meeting individual education goals and objectives; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Assist in behavior management of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor and interact with students during recess, outdoor, and other recreational activities as assigned.
  • Grade student tests and assignments as assigned; maintain records and student files related to progress, behavior and assigned activities.
  • Assists students with improving fluency, writing stories and summaries of books; assist students with punctuation, grammar and spelling.
  • Monitor and assist students with activities to develop and learn gross and fine motor skills.
  • Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition; assist students with writing exercises and assignments.
  • Ensure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; provide classroom support by setting up work areas and displays and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
  • Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, printer, laminator, computer and assigned software.
  • Communicate with faculty, staff, administrators and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Attend meetings and in-services for classroom programs as assigned.
  • Comply with mandated reporting requirements.

Other Duties:
Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

Equivalent to high school graduation; meet one of the following criteria:
Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education, or obtained an Associate's Degree (or higher), or pass the District established Instructional Assistant Exam.

Experience:

One year experience working with students in an organized setting.

Knowledge Of:
Child guidance principles and practices related to students with reading, writing, fluency and vocabulary issues. Principles, practices and procedures of a school remedial reading program. Basic subjects taught in local schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Basic phonics, spelling and sentence structure rules. District organization, operations, regulations, policies and objectives related to position.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Mandated reporting requirements.
