Department Summary

The Department of Nutrition, Food Science, and Packaging at San José State University (SJSU) is looking for qualified, enthusiastic, and dedicated instructors to teach courses in our BS in Nutritional Science and MS in Nutritional Science programs, including both on‑campus and online/hybrid formats.

Brief Description of Duties

Lecturers will prepare and deliver courses in alignment with the department’s vision, focusing on applied research and serving multicultural populations. Responsibilities include curriculum development, student assessment, office hours, and contributing to accreditation activities.

  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of an exceptionally diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
  • All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term in the mode assigned (e.g., asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, or in‑person).
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline OR
    Master’s degree in related discipline
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline to which the individual is assigned
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring
  • Ability to teach and evaluate adult learners
  • Nutrition practice experience or Packaging professional practice (required for teaching practice courses)
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and collegial skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to multicultural educational goals
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral or terminal degree in the field
  • Registered Dietitian (preferred but not required)
  • Knowledge of nutrition profession trends in diversity and globalization, including specializations with certain cultural and/or language groups
  • Ability to teach in both online and in‑person formats
  • Proficiency with technology, software, multimedia and social media relevant to teaching
Conditional Appointment

The appointment is contingent on budget and enrollment considerations and subject to the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association, including the Order of Work provisions for course assignment.

Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience, in accordance with University Policy S21-2.

  • L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
  • L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
  • L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
  • L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347

Conditional Offer

Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States, successful background check, and compliance with the collective bargaining agreement. The position requires commuting to the campus and may be subject to further conditions.
