Lanteris Space Systems is seeking an Avionics Electrical Design Engineer focused on digital electronics and firmware design to join our Bus Electronics Design team. This hands‑on, on‑site position is located in San Jose, CA.
The Bus Electronics team designs, verifies, and supports manufacturing of electronics for our spacecraft, which span pLEO to deep space and support national defense, earth observation, communications, and interplanetary missions such as NASA’s Psyche Discovery Program and the SR‑1 Freedom mission to Mars.
Responsibilities- Act as the engineering focal for one or several avionics units, down to component and firmware level, understanding system interfaces.
- Provide technical leadership and recommendations for system trades, requirements capture, and design choices in an ambiguous design space.
- Own hardware through design, production, satellite integration, and on‑orbit performance.
- Design, analyze, and test digital electronics hardware; prototype and bring up designs.
- Document engineering test and qualification plans and execute hardware validation through bench‑top and environmental testing, including troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations of anomalous circuit behavior.
- Develop and manage electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and firmware.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teammates to drive project success.
- Support Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM) with customers and internal stakeholders.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, with at least 8 years of experience.
- Proficiency in design, simulation, analysis, and testing of digital electronics circuits, including microprocessors, microcontrollers, FPGA, System on Chip, and high‑speed communication protocols such as Space Wire, Ethernet, CAN, RS‑422/485, and firmware development.
- Experience with schematics and circuit board layout for digital and mixed‑signal electronics and high‑speed communications.
- Experience applying analysis methods such as circuit stress, derating, and worst‑case analysis.
- Experience writing and reviewing firmware code.
- Experience collaborating with adjacent disciplines (thermal, mechanical, reliability, manufacturing, and test).
- Hands‑on experience with V&V, qualification testing, and troubleshooting at hardware and software levels.
- 15 years of relevant experience, including leading electrical engineering designs through the full lifecycle.
- Exposure to radiation‑hardened designs; single‑event effects and mitigation analysis.
- Design considerations for reliability, redundancy, FMECA, and radiation effects in space.
- Familiarity with OpenVPX and Space
VPX standards. - Self‑motivated, detail oriented, proactive problem‑solving and communication skills.
- Knowledge of Design for Excellence (DFX).
- Incentive eligible with target based on contribution, company performance, or individual results.
- Base pay in California ranges from $ to $ annually for lead level, and $ to $ annually for principal level.
- Pay ranges are geographic‑adjusted for other states.
