Job Overview
Lumentum invites an experienced III‑V Epitaxy Process Engineer to join our manufacturing team in San Jose, California. The role focuses on managing epitaxy process ownership, driving continuous improvement, and supporting 24×7 fabrication operations.
Responsibilities- Serve as process engineer for epitaxy‑related activities, supporting manufacturing and R&D for continuous product improvement and new product introduction.
- Assume ownership of metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) epitaxy processes on dedicated reactors and/or product portfolio toward 24×7 manufacturing of optoelectronic devices for optical communications and consumer applications.
- Deliver on key epitaxy production metrics, including line yield, tool throughput, and continuous improvement processes; participate in reactor component design improvement and on‑time delivery to growth commitments.
- Generate and present data to drive epitaxial manufacturing continuity, troubleshoot processes, document procedures, optimize wafer cost/cycle time, and implement lean manufacturing practices.
- Provide technical support and training; manage engineering change orders, statistical process control (SPC) analysis, and corrective actions.
- Interface closely with manufacturing production, product engineers, equipment engineers, process engineers, and chip design engineers to maintain & improve legacy wafer‑fab products and develop new products.
- Support 24×7 fab operations, including additional off‑hours on‑call support as required.
- Ph.D. (with 3+ years of applicable hands‑on experience) or Master’s degree (with 5+ years of applicable hands‑on experience) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of III‑V compound semiconductor epitaxy growth experience with expertise in materials and device physics and demonstrated troubleshooting skills in MOCVD processes.
- Strong data analysis, technical reporting, and presentation skills.
- Solid track record in epitaxy growth of InP‑based materials (InP, In Ga As , In Ga As P, In Al Ga As ) or GaAs‑based materials.
- Hands‑on experience with MOCVD reactor hardware and software, and capability upgrades; prior experience with AIX 2400G3, AIX 2600G3, AIX 2800G4, or AIX G10 planetary systems is a plus.
- Knowledge of relevant III‑V wafer and device characterization techniques (photoluminescence, XRD, ECV/Polaron, defect scan, thin‑film reflectometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry).
- Familiarity with design of experiment (DOE), statistical process control (SPC), and process performance improvement methodologies.
- Highly motivated self‑starter capable of independent work, strong team player, excellent communication skills, and adaptability to rapidly changing priorities.
Primary location:
San Jose, CA (Rose Orchard Way, 80 Rose Orchard Way, San Jose, 95134). 100% onsite, full‑time, regular employee status. Travel: less than 5%.
