Overview
Lanteris Space Systems is seeking an Avionics Electrical Design Engineer focused on digital electronics and firmware design to join our Bus Electronics Design team. The role is a hands‑on, on‑site position located in San Jose, CA. The team designs, verifies, and supports the manufacturing of the electronics that power our high‑powered spacecraft, which operate from pLEO to deep space including national defense, earth observation, and interplanetary missions such as NASA’s Psyche Discovery Program.
Responsibilities- Act as engineering focal for one or several avionics units, from component and firmware level up to system interfaces.
- Provide technical leadership and recommend system trades, requirements capture, and design choices in ambiguous design spaces.
- Own hardware from design, production, satellite integration, to on‑orbit performance.
- Design, analyze, and test digital electronics hardware for spacecraft applications, prototyping and bringing up designs.
- Document engineering test and qualification plans; execute hardware validation through benchtop and environmental testing; troubleshoot and investigate root causes.
- Develop and manage electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and firmware.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (mechanical, thermal, software/firmware, test, supply chain) to drive project success.
- Support Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM) with customers and stakeholders.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or related field.
- Minimum 8 years of experience.
- Proficiency in design, simulation, analysis, and testing of digital electronics circuits, including microprocessors, microcontrollers, FPGA, and System on Chip.
- Experience with high‑speed communications (Space Wire, Ethernet, CAN, RS‑422/485) and firmware development.
- Proficiency in schematics and PCB layout for digital and mixed‑signal electronics.
- Experience with circuit stress, derating, worst‑case analysis, firmware coding, and collaborative cross‑disciplinary work.
- Hands‑on experience with verification & validation (V&V), qualification testing, and troubleshooting at hardware and software levels.
- 15 years of relevant experience, including leading electrical engineering designs through the full lifecycle.
- Exposure to radiation‑hardened designs, single event effects mitigation, and radiation analysis.
- Knowledge of reliability, redundancy, FMECA, and space environment considerations.
- Familiarity with OpenVPX and SpaceVPX standards.
- Self‑motivated with attention to detail, proactive problem‑solving, effective communication, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of Design for Excellence (DFX).
Base pay for the Lead level in California: $123,000 – $205,000 annually.
Base pay for the Principal level in California: $151,000 – $251,000 annually.
Benefits include paid time off, health and welfare insurance, and 401(k) for eligible employees. The role is incentive eligible with targets based on contribution, company performance, and individual results.
