Job Summary
The Venmo Data Platforms team is responsible for engineering and operating Venmo's internal and customer-facing production data stores, including Aurora MySQL, Amazon Document DB, Cassandra, Elasti Cache, Open Search, and DynamoDB. As a Staff Database Engineer on the Data Platforms team, you will partner closely with engineering leadership to prioritize initiatives that align service operations with business goals. You will be a hands‑on technical leader who leads by example, mentoring engineers and product owners to improve service availability, reliability, and scalability through best practices.
In this role, you will design, implement, automate, and operate next‑generation, cloud‑native database systems. You will drive operational excellence through automation and AI‑driven optimization, collaborating closely with infrastructure and product teams to support Venmo's data‑driven innovation, platform resilience, and continued growth.
- Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system
- Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow
- Actions result in achieving customer, operational, program or service objectives
- Proactively improves existing structures & processes
- Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
- Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
- Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
- Trusted to represent Pay Pal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations
- 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR any equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Infrastructure as code (AWS CLI, AWS Cloud Formation, Terraform, Ansible, Puppet)
- Programming and scripting (Lambda, APIGW, Python, Java, Bash)
- Database design for relational and non-relational data stores
- Database operations: AWS DynamoDB, AWS Document DB, Cassandra, MySQL, AWS Aurora, Redis, Elasticsearch
- Experience mentoring and developing leads and engineers
- Strong communication skills with the ability to understand and explain technical issues to a non-technical audience
- AWS Solutions Architect preferred
