Field Engineer 1 – Underground Construction & Tunneling
San Jose, California, United States
Full‑time, regular position.
Position Summary:Perform engineering duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction of underground systems and structures.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:- Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geological data to plan projects.
- Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
- Plan and design structures, following construction and government standards, using design software and drawing tools.
- Compute load and grade requirements, water flow rates, and material stress factors to determine design specifications.
- Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety standards.
- Provide technical advice regarding design, construction, or program modifications and structural repairs to managerial personnel.
- Assume additional responsibilities as directed by division and corporate management.
- Travel as required to attend meetings, site visits, training, and other related activities.
- Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Apply mathematics and scientific rules/methods to solve problems.
- Communicate information and ideas clearly in speaking and writing.
- Listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
- Determine the tools and equipment needed to perform a job.
- Work well in a non‑structured environment.
- Demonstrate leadership behaviors necessary to guide others in achieving team goals.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, database management, and AutoCAD.
- Regular use of hands and fingers to handle objects, tools, or manipulate controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.
- Stand, walk, and sit frequently; occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Work near moving mechanical parts and construction equipment; in high or precarious places; in outside weather conditions; and be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Proper personal protective equipment and safeguards must be utilized.

- Bachelor's Degree in an engineering‑related field:
Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Underground Tunneling and Construction Engineering. - 0–5 years experience (Field/Office Engineer or Engineer Intern).
- Previous underground construction experience preferred.
