Senior Tunneling Design Unit Engineer
WSP is seeking a Senior Tunneling Design Unit Engineer to join our dynamic Transportation team in California. This role will be based in a client office in San Jose.
Your Impact- Will be Program management staff embedded within the contractor's design-build team to act as a liaison for a given design unit (DU).
- Oversee the development of the tunnel lining, precast concrete manufacturing, TBM laydown, muck disposal, and tunneling work plans.
- Oversees coordination with Contractor's teams and external parties, such as BART, Caltrans, Caltrain, UPRR, and City of Santa Clara, etc.
- Integrate into Contractor's Design Unit teams. Coordinate directly with Contractor's DU Managers.
- Be fully aware of all design development progress. Focus on meeting requirements, interface issues, external affairs, right-of-way implications, environmental considerations, etc.
- DULs should serve as a resource to the Contractor's DU Manager for coordination between Construction Contract Packages (CP) and with VTA organization.
- Be fully aware of all design developments which would have cost and schedule implications.
- Report to Contract Package 2 (CP2) management on issues within DUs which need to be addressed at a program level.
- Facilitate coordination between Design Units and other VTA organizations.
- Coordinate responses to contractor Request for Information (RFI).
- Facilitate & coordinate external design submittal reviews.
- Participate in VTA design submittal reviews.
- Remain current in latest engineering techniques and practices.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior geotechnical design experience.
- California PE is strongly preferred.
- Experience leading the design of large-diameter tunnel linings.
- Experience with planning for large-diameter tunneling projects in urban areas.
- Experience on projects with project stakeholders (i.e. BART, Caltrans, Caltrain, UPRR, and City of Santa Clara, etc.).
- Understanding of team members roles and responsibilities to properly act as liaison between VTA and contractor.
- Understanding of how design decisions can impact other contract packages and the program-wide elements, to properly pull in the correct resources for input, review, and comment, as needed.
- Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
- Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including scoping, and tracking hours and expenses for project work.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, Geo Slope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors, drillers, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $107,500 - $150,000
