Under direct to general supervision, the Assistant Engineer I/II – Civil supports civil engineering and project management activities across planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of water infrastructure and utility projects. The role contributes to engineering studies, design development, contract administration, and construction support, while progressively handling more complex assignments and smaller project ownership.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct engineering studies, analyses, and investigations across disciplines such as hydraulic, environmental, geotechnical, and water systems.
- Prepare engineering designs, calculations, specifications, reports, and construction documentation.
- Support all phases of projects including planning, design, procurement, construction, and close‑out.
- Review contractor submissions (drawings, RFIs, submittals) and provide design clarifications.
- Assist with project management activities such as budgets, schedules, cost estimates, and contract administration.
- Support construction activities including inspections, change orders, and compliance monitoring.
- Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, contractors, and external agencies.
- Prepare and present technical reports and recommendations to stakeholders.
- (Level II) Manage small projects or phases of larger projects, including risk identification and solution implementation.
- Assistant Engineer I:
No prior professional experience required (entry‑level). - Assistant Engineer II:
Minimum of 2 years of professional engineering experience.
- Experience in water infrastructure, water treatment systems, or utility projects.
- Exposure to project management, construction support, and contract administration.
- Experience in engineering design, analysis, and regulatory compliance within public infrastructure.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and standards.
- Water resource management, hydrology, hydraulics, and environmental engineering concepts.
- Project management methodologies, budgeting, cost estimation, and contract administration.
- Engineering design, calculations, and data analysis techniques.
- Regulatory compliance and applicable laws related to infrastructure projects.
- Engineering software, data analysis tools, and MS Office applications.
- Preparing technical drawings, plans, and reports.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interpret technical data and present insights clearly.
- Stakeholder management and collaboration with cross‑functional teams.
- Organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Sound judgment and decision‑making ability within engineering guidelines.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (required).
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification (preferred or equivalent pathway).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred for advanced roles).
- Valid driver’s license (as required for field/project assignments).
