Role OverviewThe Civil Engineering Intern will support the Community Projects Review Unit within Watershed Stewardship & Planning by gaining practical experience in civil engineering, permit processing, utility research, GIS mapping, property records review, and customer service-related engineering activities. The role provides exposure to engineering documentation, land rights research, and infrastructure protection processes.
Key Responsibilities- Review permit applications for completeness and track application status.
- Research utility records and review construction plans.
- Prepare permits, written correspondence, permit exhibits, maps, and supporting documentation.
- Research property ownership, easements, and right-of-way information using GIS maps, County Assessor records, and engineering documents.
- Respond to Underground Service Alert (USA) tickets by analyzing GIS maps, records, and Valley Water facilities information to identify potential impacts to infrastructure.
- Assist with annual updates of land rights information on County Assessor map books.
- Maintain permit and project records within organizational databases.
- Support customer inquiry resolution related to permit processing.
Required:
- Foundational knowledge of civil engineering principles and terminology.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, maps, and construction plans.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
Preferred:
- Exposure to Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Understanding of surveying concepts.
- Knowledge of utilities and right-of-way processes.
- Familiarity with permit administration or engineering records management.
Technical
Skills:
- Civil engineering fundamentals.
- Interpretation of engineering drawings, maps, and construction plans.
- GIS map research and analysis (preferred).
- Property ownership, easement, and right-of-way research.
- Permit application review and documentation.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Adobe Acrobat.
- Database and records management.

- Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Must be in Sophomore year or higher.
- Coursework must be relevant to the assigned engineering duties.
Preferred:
- Coursework related to GIS, surveying, utilities, transportation, land development, or construction engineering.
