Position: Police Lieutenant - Police Department

The San José Police Department is dedicated to providing public safety through community partnerships and 21st Century Policing practices, ensuring equity for all. The salary range for Police Lieutenant classification is: $ - $.

This amount includes an approximate 3.75% ongoing non-pensionable crisis intervention training pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The Police Lieutenant plans, directs, supervises, and manages the staff and operations of an assigned watch or section within the Field Operations, Administration, Investigations and Technical Services bureaus. The incumbent directs and participates in the work of staff to ensure the protection of life and property of the City’s residents and visitors. The incumbents work regularly on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgement.

Typical

duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Responds to, and assumes command of, major events and emergencies.
  • Coordinates incident response activities with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Provides direction on department policies and procedures; identifies and arranges for staff training.
  • Prepare and delivers performance evaluation; ensures staff compliance with departmental and mandated rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Directs the work of officers responding to crime scenes.
  • Performs administrative work with respect to assigned area, complies data and prepares reports on staffing levels, equipment and materials needed and budgetary expenditures.
  • Reviews a variety of technical and administrative documents including memos, reports, and policies and procedures ensuring dissemination of appropriate information to operational staff.
  • Performs related work as required.
