About the Role
Abode Services, one of the largest and effective nonprofits working to end homelessness in the Bay Area, is seeking a skilled Part‑Time Harm Reduction Specialist to support our Santa Clara County Programs in San Jose. This position requires 2 years of experience providing substance recovery services.
Key Highlights- Part‑time role – 24 hours per week

- Provide clinical case management services, including rehabilitative services, brokerage, collateral, and therapy to residents using an Assertive Community Treatment model.
- Complete assessments and develop treatment plans for participants residing at the site.
- Collaborate with participants to develop and work toward their recovery goals.
- Meet with prospective participants, conduct outreach, initial intakes, and assessments.
- Act as lead on the team for substance use disorder issues.
- Utilize Motivational Interviewing techniques to explore participants’ substance use/dependency, encourage reduction, provide support toward abstinence, and/or offer relapse prevention services.
- Develop relationships with community agencies providing outpatient and residential drug and alcohol services; support participants in connecting to those services.
- Perform mental status examinations and safety assessments (suicide, homicide, gravely disabled) with participants on an ongoing basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
- CADACC I or II preferred; or SUD certification plus field experience in an SUD setting.
- Minimum 2 years of experience providing substance recovery services.
- Minimum 2 years of field experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, co‑occurring disorders, complex health issues, and/or the chronically homeless population.
- Valid California driver’s license, current auto insurance, and a clean DMV record; use of personal vehicle required.
- Excellent verbal & written communication, organizational, and time‑management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of evidence‑based practices:
Housing First, Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, and Relapse Prevention Therapy. - Proficient in completing assessments, treatment plans, and clinical writing; experienced in high‑volume clinical documentation.
- Experienced in crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related business applications; capable of learning mobile devices and other applications.
- Understanding and practice of culturally sensitive service delivery; high emotional intelligence, cultural humility, and relationship‑building skills.
- Communicating with others, reading materials.
- Manual dexterity for keyboard use; repetitive wrist/hand motions.
- Remaining stationary, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Driving and operating a vehicle for extended periods.
- Mobility between floors, stairs, or ramps.
- Light lifting up to 25 pounds; squatting, bending, crouching, reaching.
- Ability to work in a shared office with moderate to high noise; multi‑level buildings; occasional travel within the county.
