The Student Union, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California: the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center (PCUEC), and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job SummaryThe HR Business Partner (HRBP) aligns employees and management with Student Union business objectives, supporting all HR operations within their verticals. The HRBP maintains a high level of business literacy about their units’ midrange plans, culture, and needs, and may support talent acquisition, payroll and benefits, employee onboarding, training and development, policy development, and various projects. The position reports to the Associate Director, Human Resources of Student Union.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Consults with line management, providing HR guidance when appropriate.
- Provides HR policy guidance and interpretation.
- Supports the HR department goals and objectives, facilitating innovation and change to meet the needs of the Student Union mission, campus culture, and staff engagement.
- Ensures employees and the Student Union are in alignment with strategic plans and compliant with State, Federal, and local labor laws.
- Identifies training needs for business units and individual executive coaching needs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Establishes and leads standard recruiting and hiring practices and procedures to recruit and hire an outstanding workforce.
- Meets with all search committees to review recruiting policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Works with hiring committees and chairs to review recruiting policies, procedures, selection, interviewing, and recommendations to the hiring manager.
- Oversees the recruitment process in Frontline Education, the hiring platform for all employees, including volunteers, exempt and non‑exempt full time, part‑time, and student assistants.
- Works closely with department managers or supervisors to ensure position descriptions and recruitments are completed properly and timely.
- Verifies the HR manager budget for positions when requested to hire.
- Logs and completes verifications of employment; issues written letters as requested.
- Completes accurate background checks for employees.
- Prepares offer letters, new hire paperwork, and onboarding, including I‑9 processing and person of interest forms.
- Develops an onboarding and offboarding plan for all new employees.
- Enrolls, manages, and ensures all employees comply with California State University (CSU) Learning & Development requirements for employment.
- Provides necessary education and materials to student assistants and non‑exempt/exempt employees via employee manuals, handbooks, and policies/procedures for the corporation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, Organizational Development, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of HR experience leading HR functions for a mid‑ to large‑size organization.
- Three years of supervisory experience with personnel and employee support.
- Working knowledge of multiple HR disciplines: terminations, compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, benefits administration, diversity, performance management, employee development, safety training, and federal and state employment laws.
- PHR or SHRM certification in HR.
- Master’s degree and 4–5 years of experience in a college union and/or human resource department management and supervision.
