We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to support Google's Augmented Reality (AR) Data Collection initiatives. The ideal candidate will own the documentation ecosystem for AR data collection operations, serving as the bridge between engineering, research, and operations teams. This role requires creating high-quality documentation that enables field and laboratory teams to safely and efficiently collect high-fidelity data using next-generation AR devices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Author, edit, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for AR data collection pilots and large-scale operational studies.
  • Develop detailed documentation for hardware setup, calibration, maintenance, hygiene, and troubleshooting of AR headsets, sensors, cameras, and motion capture systems.
  • Collaborate with Research Scientists, Hardware Engineers, Program Managers, and Operations teams to convert complex technical requirements into clear, user-friendly documentation.
  • Create operational workflows, installation guides, troubleshooting manuals, quick reference guides, and process documentation.
  • Observe laboratory or field data collection activities to validate documentation accuracy and improve procedures based on operational feedback.
  • Partner with Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) teams to document safety procedures for users operating AR/VR equipment.
  • Design and maintain documentation architecture within Confluence, Google Workspace, Wikis, or Content Management Systems (CMS).
  • Produce visual documentation including screenshots, diagrams, flowcharts, photographs, and instructional materials.
  • Create multimedia training content such as short instructional videos and visual walkthroughs.
  • Ensure documentation is version-controlled, easily accessible, and aligned with engineering changes.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and support continuous documentation updates throughout the product lifecycle.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of Technical Writing experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience supporting Hardware, Manufacturing, Operations, Consumer Electronics, or AR/VR technologies.

  • Process Documentation
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating procedural documentation and step-by-step technical guides.
  • Excellent written, verbal, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to quickly understand complex hardware and software systems and translate them into easy-to-follow documentation.
  • Experience working with engineering, research, product, and operations teams.
