Position: Oncology Research Nursing Professional (RN), South Bay Cancer Center

A Brief Overview:
The Oncology Research Nursing Professional (ORNP) is a Registered Nurse (RN) who collaborates with Clinical Research Staff—including Physicians, Clinical Research Associates (CRA), APPs, Clinical Nurses, Pharmacists, and clinic staff—to coordinate care for patients enrolled in cancer center clinical research trials. As the research expert of the multidisciplinary team, the ORNP works independently and is accountable for the accurate conduct of their assigned cancer research protocol portfolio.

Responsibilities include educating the team on the protocol, setting up operational workflows, and ensuring adherence to good clinical practices.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Trial Management
    : collaborate with investigators to lead study patient screening, eligibility determination, and enrollment assessments; assess and document signs, symptoms, and changes in patient condition per protocol; manage patient/family phone calls and coordinate orders with physicians, NPs, or PAs; collaborate with CRC to place and remove therapeutic clinical trial flags; plan, coordinate, and complete randomization, patient assessments, treatments, and follow‑up care; demonstrate multitasking, prioritization, and attention to detail to avoid protocol deviations.
  • Informed Consent Process
    : manage the consent process in compliance with institutional, FDA, IRB, sponsor, and other regulations; educate patients regarding the clinical trial; document education and consent; alert the principal investigator of concerns; ensure signed consent is scanned and aligned with institutional and sponsor processes.
  • Protocol Compliance
    : assist CRCs with internal/external study monitor visits, site visits, and study close‑outs; develop protocol‑specific Beacon order sets in collaboration with pharmacy and investigators; oversee and promote compliance with protocol procedures and processes; coordinate scheduling of follow‑up visits and diagnostic testing; provide education to nursing staff regarding the clinical trial; ensure adherence to GCP, ICH, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Follow institutional and regulatory guidelines, ensuring adherence to GCP, ICH, FDA, and California Nurse Practice Act; deliver population‑specific care considering age, culture, and social issues; maintain an organized and efficient work environment; participate in a collaborative, positive work environment; demonstrate professional practice that supports appropriate care and positive working relationships; maintain current knowledge of organizational and regulatory standards; design and provide training and guidance to operational teams;

    assess feasibility and design workflow for research programs; assist investigators in protocol development; analyze and interpret clinical results; present at research meetings; report on activities and outcomes; perform related duties as assigned; manage multiple clinical research tasks simultaneously; interact with senior staff and act as subject matter expert; precept/mentor new research staff and students; communicate vetted clinical research information at all levels.
Education

Qualifications
  • BSN or higher-level nursing degree required.
  • MSN highly preferred.
  • Master’s in research or healthcare‑related field preferred.
Experience Qualifications
  • 5+ years nursing experience required or 3+ years in an oncology research nurse role.
  • 2+ years of experience in oncology.
  • Experience in clinical research, ICU, other intensive care settings, pediatrics, case management, or nurse navigation preferred.
  • Human subjects’ protection and Good Clinical Practices training (can be completed after hire).
