Role Overview

The Laboratory Technician I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting laboratory operations related to water quality testing. The role focuses on routine laboratory and field tasks performed under close supervision and serves as a training classification, with progression to Laboratory Technician II based on demonstrated proficiency. The position supports microbiological, chemical, and bacteriological analysis of water samples while adhering to regulatory, quality, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine water analysis, particularly microbiological testing, with minimal supervision.
  • Collect influent, effluent, and turnout water samples from designated field locations and record observations and data.
  • Prepare chemical reagents, standard solutions, stains, and bacteriological media for testing and quality control purposes.
  • Conduct routine physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of water samples.
  • Set up, calibrate, operate, clean, and perform basic maintenance on laboratory equipment and glassware.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance tasks to ensure compliance with State and laboratory requirements.
  • Maintain laboratory safety practices, assist with laboratory safety inspections, and ensure proper hazardous waste disposal.
  • Compile, record, and enter test data into logs, worksheets, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Assist with inventory management, ordering laboratory supplies, and preparing field sampling kits.
Required Experience

Required:

  • Two (2) years of chemical, biological, or bacteriological laboratory experience
  • OR
  • Twelve (12) semester units of college-level coursework in physical, natural, or earth sciences may substitute for the required experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience operating and troubleshooting basic laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) laboratory practices.
  • Knowledge of ELAP and/or TNI standards, or equivalent, related to water or wastewater analysis.
  • Some experience with field sampling and completion of chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word (advanced skills preferred)

  • Basic laboratory testing techniques in chemistry and bacteriology.
  • Preparation of standard chemical solutions, reagents, and microbiological media.
  • Operation and maintenance of standard laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Accurate data recording, documentation, and report preparation.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety procedures, hazardous waste disposal, and regulatory compliance.
  • Basic computer skills including LIMS and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to learn and follow established laboratory procedures under close supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality standards.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and clear notes.

  • Demonstrated safety awareness and responsibility in laboratory and field environments.
Education / Certifications
  • Minimum Education:

    Completion of 12th grade (high school diploma or equivalent).
  • College Coursework (Preferred/Substitution):
    Coursework in physical, natural, or earth sciences may substitute for experience.
  • Licenses:
    Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required if driving is an essential function of the position.
