The City of San Jose is recruiting part‑time School Crossing Guards for the Police Department during the normal school year. The role involves providing for the safe conduct of elementary and junior‑high school children across heavily traveled streets and reporting problems that may require police action. Positions may involve substituting at different corners or a regular location assignment. Work is a split shift with approximately ten (10) hours per week and requires working outdoors, regardless of weather conditions, while providing a specified uniform.
Key physical tasks include sitting, standing, walking quickly, stepping up/down from the curb, reaching, pushing and/or pulling, twisting and/or rotating, bending, lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, holding and using a stop sign all shift, using another hand to stop traffic, and using a whistle.

Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license may be required for some assignments. As a condition of employment, incumbents may be required to use their personal vehicles in performing the job duties. - Incumbents opting to participate in special event traffic control assistance must complete an initial Flagger training course in accordance with Cal OSHA regulations and refresher training every three years.
- Pass a personal background investigation as required by the Police Department.
The selection process includes evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and answers to job‑specific questions. Candidates whose backgrounds best match the positions are forwarded for interviews. Applicants deemed most competitive after application screening and oral interview must pass a Police Background Investigation and Medical exam.
Benefits and PayEffective 6/22/2025, the base hourly rate is $30.48.
Additional Competencies and Desirable Qualifications- Knowledge of traffic control techniques and procedures.
- Knowledge of the traffic laws of California and the City of San Jose.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability and willingness to work in all‑weather situations.
- Experience working with children.
- Read city maps.
- Access to a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
- Understanding of traffic hazards.
- Good judgment and the ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
- Ability to give and follow oral instruction.
- Maintain confidentiality and work reliably in time‑constrained assignments.
- Cooperate with coworkers, supervisors, parents, school officials and law enforcement.
Q:
How many hours a week will I be working?
A:
Part‑time (maximum ten hours a week). You will be paid a minimum of two hours per scheduled day; exact hours are not guaranteed.

Will I wear a uniform?
A:
Yes. You will be required to purchase a uniform (shirt or blouse, pants, jacket, black shoes, and a hat). Approximate cost is $150 minimum; a uniform allowance is paid in January based on hours worked the previous twelve months.

Can I choose where I work?
A:
No. You will be assigned to a School Safety Supervisor who will place you where you are needed.

How soon will I be hired?
A:
It may take several weeks for interviews. If your application meets the minimum requirements, you will be evaluated, placed on the School Crossing Guard eligible list, and notified by mail.
