Software Engineer Project Intern; AI Infrastructure PhD

Responsibilities

Our Browser Kernel and Cross Platform team focuses on building a high performance browser engine and cross platform mobile framework that are widely used by Byte Dance applications. In this role you will work to make the browser engine and framework more performant, productive and useful, delivering a high quality UI rendering engine while maintaining cross‑platform compatibility. You will also design architecture and implement key features of the cross‑platform application framework.

As a project intern you will engage in short‑term projects that provide professional real‑world experience, working closely with product teams and gaining practical skills in a fast‑paced environment. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis – we encourage you to apply early. Successful candidates must be able to commit to at least 3 months of internship.

• Work closely with product teams to build innovative and performant cross‑platform application framework.
• Design, implement, maintain and improve the architecture of cross‑platform application framework.
• Analyze and optimize UI rendering performance, improve code quality and efficiency.
• Carry out code reviews to guarantee code quality.

• Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related discipline.
• Proficiency in coding & scripting languages such as C/C++, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Objective‑C, or Swift.
• Technical knowledge of mobile application (Android/iOS) development.
• Good team communication and collaboration skills.

• Prior internship experience in mobile development (Android/iOS apps).
• Development experience with cross platform frameworks such as Flutter.

Hourly rate: $60-$60. Interns receive day‑one access to health insurance, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, 10 paid holidays per year and paid sick time (56 hours if hired in first half of year, 40 if hired in second half). Interns who are not 100% remote may also be eligible for a housing allowance.
