Job Summary
Pay with Venmo lets millions of users checkout at merchants across the web and in native apps. We need a full‑stack engineer to build and improve those checkout experiences, from backend services that orchestrate payment flows to the web surfaces merchants integrate with.
Essential Responsibilities- Implements tasks within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), receiving structure and oversight from more experienced staff.
- Follows well‑established internal conventions and standard procedures.
- Understands internal standards & processes and applies them to make technical decisions.
- Collaborates with peers, manager, and project lead to gain understanding of tasks and review solutions.
- May contribute to code & design reviews.
- 1 year of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Build and maintain backend services that power Pay with Venmo checkout flows, including the Graph
QL orchestration layer that connects merchants, mobile clients, and payment processing. - Develop and improve web frontend checkout surfaces that merchants integrate with through Pay Pal Checkout and Braintree.
- Write clean, well‑tested code and participate in code reviews to maintain a high quality bar.
- Collaborate with mobile engineers, product managers, and designers to bring new features to life.
- Help debug and resolve issues across the full checkout flow, from the merchant’s payment button through to settlement.
- Contribute to engineering standards around testing, CI/CD, observability, and on‑call practices.
- Learn and grow within a team that works on payments infrastructure at scale.
- Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with hands‑on experience using at least one modern front‑end framework such as React, Angular, or Vue.
- Foundational understanding of backend technologies and APIs, with a desire to build skills in server‑side development.
- Familiarity with Graph
QL or RESTful API design. - Knowledge of version control (Git) and familiarity with agile development environments.
- Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving ability, and a collaborative mindset.
- Eagerness to learn, adapt, and grow within a fast‑paced engineering organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience with Node.js or similar server‑side JavaScript environments.
- Understanding of responsive design principles and web accessibility standards.
- Familiarity with cloud services, database integration, or application monitoring tools such as Datadog.
- Exposure to payments, fintech, or commerce platforms.
- Experience using AI tools and LLMs to accelerate software development workflows.
Base pay range: $ – $ annually (San Jose, California). Additional compensation may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
