Role Mission:
Students and families are the most important stakeholders at IDEA Public Schools. The School Counselor leads the campus family engagement vision, social emotional learning program, and coordination of mental health and counseling supports for all scholars on the campus. The School Counselor ensures staff build authentic relationships with students and families, maintains data to drive campus interventions, and aligns goals to campus strategies.

Family engagement and student success are the responsibility of the entire campus team, with the School Counselor directing and holding all team members accountable to fulfill their roles.

When implemented effectively, the school community has clear roles, relevant data to drive action, and strong engagement with students and families. The School Counselor helps create a safe and supportive physical and emotional learning environment where students can grow and succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Compensation: Salaries for this role typically fall between 64,987 and 75,385, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is eligible for a performance bonus based on team performance and goal attainment.

Responsibilities related to student persistence, family engagement, and data-driven school improvement include the following:

• Lead the execution of the school vision for retaining all students by directing and managing stakeholders in family engagement and student persistence.
• Plan and execute student and family engagement events aligned with campus culture and community needs to foster authentic relationships.
• Lead Professional Development for the entire campus to clarify roles in family engagement.
• Manage campus student persistence data with the PEIMS team to ensure data accuracy; communicate data rationale to stakeholders to identify trends.
• Partner with grade-level teams to coordinate interventions for at-risk students with accountability structures for Admin, GTLs, and Teachers.
• Lead parent conversations and problem solve to meet student and family needs in collaboration with the campus lead team.
• Lead family communications platforms (Remind, Smore, Facebook) and administer parent and student surveys to inform strategic planning and responses.
• Ensure onboarding for new students and families with 100% data accuracy and reporting in collaboration with SIS/Registrar and campus teams.
• Oversee implementation of Move This World as part of the social-emotional learning curriculum with fidelity; train staff and monitor progress; assess impact on school climate and belonging.
• Coordinate crisis response and risk assessment processes; ensure documentation and data integrity across systems; and present updates to campus leadership teams.
• Develop campus crisis binders and ensure understanding of risk and threat assessment materials among CCT members.

Other duties include ensuring a climate of safety, belonging, and support through data-informed practices and collaborations with community resources.

• Education: Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field (required).
• Experience: Previous experience in a school or school setting (preferred).
• License or Certification: Valid Texas School Counselor certification or counseling/social work licensure (LMSW, LCSW, LCSW-S, LPC-A, LPC, LMFT-A, LMFT) (required).
• Knowledge and Skills: Proven track record of success; excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to manage student behavior; alignment with IDEA’s mission and values; adaptability in the school environment.
