Social Groups and Language Skills Extern
At Developmental Specialty Partners (DSP Health), we offer structured, play-based programs that support children’s social engagement, communication, and participation in group routines. These programs operate within a collaborative clinic environment where staff work closely together to create positive, organized experiences for children and families.
The Social Groups & Language Skills Extern role is an unpaid, supportive Externship designed for students seeking hands‑on exposure to a child‑focused clinical setting. Externs serve in a helper role
, assisting staff during structured group activities and learning about clinic operations, teamwork, and child development through observation and guided participation.
As an Extern, you will support play‑based group programs and daily clinic activities by assisting staff with preparation, organization, and child engagement. Externs do not lead sessions independently and work under direct staff supervision at all times.
This role is ideal for students interested in speech-language pathology, education, psychology, child development
, or related fields who want practical experience in a structured, team‑based environment.
Assist staff during structured group activities by setting up materials, organizing supplies, and preparing activity spaces
Support children during activities by helping guide routines, assisting with materials, and modeling participation as directed
Follow staff direction to support smooth transitions and group organization
Provide general in‑session support to clinicians and staff as needed
Assist with clinic organization, inventory, and preparation of program materials
Support light administrative or front desk tasks when requested
Observe clinic operations and learn about child development and behavioral health practices
Receive direct, ongoing supervision and step‑by‑step guidance from staff
Work alongside experienced team members who provide modeling, instruction, and feedback
Participate in activities in a supportive role
, not as an independent facilitator or clinician
Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program in a related field (e.g., Speech‑Language Pathology, Education, Psychology, Liberal Arts, or similar)
Interest in working with children and supporting language, communication, and social engagement
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
Reliable, professional, and receptive to feedback
Time CommitmentCommitment of 10–12 hours per week
Minimum commitment of 3–6 months
Approximately 80% of time supporting structured clinic activities (including Cosmic Kids and other play‑based programs)
Approximately 20% of time observing, learning, and assisting with general clinic or administrative tasks
