Senior Project Engineer (HCAI)
Kitchell is seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Project Engineer (HCAI) to join our Central California region in the San Luis Obispo area and build a long‑term career at one of the most innovative and growth‑oriented building companies in the United States.
OverviewWorking as owner’s representative assisting with PM/CM services (ground-up and modernization) within the California Healthcare Market Sector.
Duties and Responsibilities- Develop a full understanding of the scope and interdependence of all contract documents.
- Observe and record jobsite activity in accordance with required contractual frequency.
- Manage effective document control mechanisms for the project to ensure that work is performed in accordance with contract documents.
- Evaluate change order requests including design changes, specifications and drawing releases and report status.
- Evaluate submittals of shop drawings, material data and samples and take appropriate action based upon contract specifications.
- Review and process as‑built drawings to ensure that all changes during the course of construction are recorded.
- Review the project schedule and assist the project manager in the maintenance of it as requested.
- Manage the request for information process in order to facilitate the timely exchange of information between designer and contractor.
- Assist the project manager in the maintenance of effective cost control mechanisms for the project.
- Complete project close‑out requirements in accordance with contract documents.
- Coordinate meeting agendas, prepare minutes and follow up on action items.
- Administer quality control program as outlined in the project procedures manual.
- Become familiar with safety requirements of the project and monitor compliance.
- Utilize safe work practices and follow directives, policies and procedures for assisting and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
- Maintain effective and professional relationships with owners, architects, engineers and contractors.
- Execute additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field is preferred.
- 3 or more years of related work experience is required.
- Knowledge of construction and engineering related processes, as well as industry practices specific to the Healthcare (HCAI/OSHPD) is strongly desired.
- Knowledge of the roles and interdependence between the contractor, designer, owner, and construction manager is required.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite of tools is strongly preferred.
- Skills with construction management software such as P6 and Procure is preferred.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, is required.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical drawings and blueprints is required.
- Ability to demonstrate the competencies of achieving results, initiative, teamwork, and analytical thinking is required.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, free from suspensions or restrictions, is required.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly work in an office and/or construction environment. Conditions regularly include exposure to outdoor elements, hot/cold temperatures, wet atmospheric conditions, and cramped quarters with occasionally loud noise level in the work.
Physical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly sit, stand, walk, talk or hear and use hands to finger, feel and handle; frequently reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must frequently lift and or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
