Job Description

The successful candidate for the position of Finance Cashier is kind, welcoming, and enjoys customer service. They communicate clearly and use good judgement to resolve customer questions. This entry level role is perfect for individuals interested in government or building a career in Finance from the ground up. The position requires timely completion of tasks while serving a public counter so attention to detail and the ability to balance competing priorities are important.

The candidate should be organized, able to multitask, recover work after interruptions, and be comfortable with administrative tasks. They should also be capable of learning new systems, proficient with computers, and maintain a positive attitude, self‑motivation, and a strong work ethic while presenting a pleasant, professional demeanor at the public counter.

Job Summary

Performs a variety of cashiering, customer service, clerical, and data entry duties for the Finance Department’s Revenue Management Division.

Class Characteristics

Employees in this classification perform cashiering and routine clerical functions that require frequent public contact. Incumbents with basic cashiering and customer service experience learn departmental policies, procedures, and practices, and as experience is gained, duties are performed with greater independence. Duties are learned in a brief period of time, are clearly defined, and have established guidelines. This class may also be used for temporary or part‑time staffing, as determined by the needs of the City.

Supervision

Receives general supervision from departmental management, supervisory, professional, or higher‑level support staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receives payments at the Finance Department front counter; enters payments received into the appropriate City financial system.
  • Prints and mails documents to customers, such as business licenses, statements, remittances, notices, and permits.
  • Scans documents sent to or received by customers and stores them in the City’s official record repository.
  • Processes and distributes incoming mail to City departments.
  • Provides a high level of customer service to external and internal customers; receives and processes telephone calls, emails, and walk‑in requests; provides factual information regarding City and department services.
  • Creates or adjusts receivable transactions in the City’s financial system.
  • Updates customer accounts as requested by the departments or customers.
  • Operates standard and department‑specific office equipment, including job‑related computer hardware and software applications, telephone, cash register, scanner, and copier.
  • Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public and City staff, in person and over the telephone.
  • Simple arithmetic to accurately make monetary change.
  • Correct business English, including vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Computer applications related to the work, including word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and data entry applications.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the use of standard office equipment.
  • Interact courteously with co‑workers and the public in a manner that projects a positive image of the City and the Finance Department.
  • Handle money and operate a cash register.
  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate in both oral and written forms effectively, positively, and tactfully.
  • Work efficiently as part of a team and independently.
  • Learn methods, principles, and practices of financial and statistical record‑keeping.
  • Work with diverse populations and maintain an inclusive environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Typical Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from high school; one year of cashier, clerical, or customer service experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
