Position: Middle School (5th-8th) Latin Teacher, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy, CA

POSITION PURPOSE / JOB SUMMARY

  • As a vital part of the SLO Classical Academy team, the Middle School Latin teachers are responsible for providing effective and engaging Latin instruction in line with the classical tradition and unique qualities of SLOCA.

JOB STRUCTURE

  • Salaried, P/T, exempt status. (F/T status possible in the future)
  • Most of the teaching will be in grades 5 and 6, SLOCA’s Lower Middle School (LMS)
  • Some of the teaching will be in grades 7 and 8, SLOCA’s Upper Middle School (UMS)
  • This position will also support our Full-Time Program

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • MS Latin teacher serves under the Lower Middle School (LMS, grades 5 &
    6) Lead Teacher
  • MS Latin teacher partners with the Lower School Director, all Latin teachers, and the LMS and UMS team
  • MS Latin teacher is an active participant in the community, a contributor to the team, and embraces SLOCA’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • The structure of the LMS Latin teacher job requires being on campus for certain hours Monday-Thursday, some outside of classroom hours, and attendance at regularly scheduled meetings.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required:
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s in Latin or Classical Languages
  • Desirable:
    Graduate-level work in Latin literature, including familiarity with Vergil’sAeneid, Ovid’sMetamorphoses, Horace’sOdes, Caesar’sCommentaries, and Cicero’sEssays
  • Desirable: A minimum of 2-3 years teaching (may be subjects outside of Latin)
  • Desirable:
    Familiarity with classical education
  • A passion for Latin and its value as a part of classical curriculum
  • A basic understanding of technology, including knowledge of Word, Pages, Excel, Slides (or PPT), Google, etc.
  • SLOCA-specific
  • A willingness to learn about and passionately support the mission of SLO Classical Academy
  • Committed to supporting and upholding the school’s unique makeup as non-sectarian and accessible to families and employees from various backgrounds and beliefs
  • Clear a background check and TB screening
  • Ability to carry out duties as described below

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Providing Quality

Education:

  • Teach middle school (5th-8th) students Latin (three separate levels) in a classical, integrated, effective, and engaging fashion using our chosen curriculum, fulfilling the responsibilities of our teachers in the general Teacher Job Description (includes progress reports, etc.)
  • Provide Latin support to our full-time students weekly as scheduled
  • Stay curious and dedicated to including songs, games, chants, and other multiple modality manners of learning language that inspire the love of learning
  • Spend a reasonable amount of time out of class on curricula development, lesson planning, and preparing to provide in-class services
  • Provide a safe environment and supervision at all times while creating a respectful and positive learning space

Collaborating with SLOCA Staff + Students:

  • Collaboration with the LMS Lead Teacher, UMS Latin Teacher, and Lower School Director regarding curricular choices in the areas he or she leads
  • Work as an active member of the teaching teams for your level
  • Attend and actively participate in trainings
  • Attend Latin-related meetings
  • Depending on student interest, prepare students to attend annual the California Junior Classical League (CaJCL) convention
  • Attend various school events, staff trainings, and team meetings
  • Read weekly staff and school email updates
  • Engage in professional development opportunities (Summer Reads, Beyond Great Books program, training, etc.)
  • Staff members must adhere to all Administrative Directives and applicable SLOCA Policies, including those expressly outlined in the Teacher Field Guide 25-26 and Employee Manual
