Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Campus, Central California. Work Type:
Instructional Faculty - Temporary/Lecturer. This two-year, full-time, academic year position begins August 17, 2026. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The candidate's primary teaching contribution will be in food science. Courses taught depend on student demand, with the ability to teach undergraduate courses in topics including:
- Food chemistry and analysis
- Food processing and engineering
- Quality assurance
- Food safety
- Food laws and regulations
- Food sanitation
- Sensory analysis and product development
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.
Salary ranges (as of July 2024) per month for the respective ranks are:
- Lecturer A: $5,507 - $6,677
- Lecturer B: $6,221 - $13,224
- Lecturer C: $6,825 - $14,523
- Lecturer D: $8,593 - $15,211
Required qualifications:
- An earned Master’s in Food Science, Nutrition, or a closely related field.
- Evidence or potential for excellence in teaching, effective communication, interpersonal skills, and ability to be a team player.
- Experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching; ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary settings.
- Ability to work effectively with teams and interact with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the public.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
- Productive records of teaching and scholarly activity that would strengthen department initiatives; leadership experience is a plus.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience teaching multiple classes and relevant work experience.
- Ability to collaborate with faculty across the College and University.
- Experience working with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive learning environment.
- The position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and complies with CSU Executive Order 1083.
- A background check (including criminal records check) is required after a conditional offer of employment before starting work. An individualized assessment will consider conviction history in relation to job duties.

About the DepartmentThe Food Science and Nutrition Department aims to prepare food science, nutrition, and dietetics professionals through experiential learning and leadership opportunities. The department has 12 full-time faculty, 3 full-time lecturers, staff, and about 600 students in two majors. Beginning in Fall 2026, concentrations will include: (1) Sustainable Food Technology, (2) Food Safety, and (3) Culinology. The department offers MS in Food Science and a blended BS/MS in Food Science.
Facilities include labs in the Boswell Ag Tech Center as part of Cal Poly’s Frost Center for Research and Innovation.
