Overview

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Department at Cuesta College seeks a full‑time, tenure‑track instructor beginning fall semester 2026. The teaching assignment will primarily involve face‑to‑face classes on the North County Campus in Paso Robles, with some distance‑education components and occasional assignments on other campus locations. Classes are mostly scheduled in the evenings, but may include day classes as required. The role also encompasses divisional responsibilities such as program review, student learning outcome assessment, curriculum development, faculty evaluations, and service on college‑wide committees.

Responsibilities
  • Teach integrated‑skills ESL courses across all proficiency levels (literacy, conversation, grammar, vocational).
  • Develop and implement culturally responsive instruction for adult multilingual learners.
  • Participate in program review and assessment, including WIOA reporting and CAEP participation.
  • Provide faculty evaluations and mentoring within the ESL department.
  • Engage in college‑wide committees and collaborative initiatives to enhance student retention and success.
  • Advocate for ESL students and program needs throughout the college and community.
Essential Functions & Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with TESL emphasis, linguistics with TESL emphasis, English with TESL emphasis, or education with TESL emphasis.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree with a TESL, TESOL, or English TESL certificate plus a Master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or a foreign language.
  • OR equivalency that meets the Board of Governors’ minimum requirements (submission of equivalent documentation required).
  • OR a valid Community College credential in the discipline (if received prior to 1990).
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Ability to engage and motivate a diverse student population across a range of ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Teaching experience in ESL, preferably at the community college level.
  • Awareness of California Community Colleges’ philosophy and objectives.
  • Experience teaching multilingual learners across proficiency levels, using varied instructional methods.
  • Expertise in culturally responsive teaching aligned with ESL students’ lives and goals.
  • Knowledge of emerging educational technologies, including AI tools, and their implications for language learning.
  • Experience supporting ESL students in academic or career pathway transitions.
  • Familiarity with ESL curriculum and materials development, including EL Civics assessments.
  • Knowledge of the Canvas Learning Management System and online/hybrid/blended modalities.
  • Ongoing commitment to professional development in ESL.
  • Leadership in program improvement, curriculum development, and departmental or college‑wide initiatives.
  • Experience evaluating and mentoring ESL instructors.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
