Tenure Track Position – Mammalogy at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

Overview

The Biological Sciences Department in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, seeks a full-time, academic year, tenure-track position in terrestrial mammalogy. The appointment begins approximately August 12, 2027. The department seeks an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor; a higher rank may be considered in an exceptional situation. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualification and experience, with the anticipated Assistant Professor hiring range being $97,788 – $107,628.

Cal Poly emphasizes excellence in undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality undergraduate and graduate education and teach a variety of biology courses, including lower-division and large-enrollment offerings. The teaching assignment may include lower-division lecture and/or lab courses for majors and nonmajors in general biology, diversity, evolution, and/or ecology, as well as upper-level courses in Mammalogy, Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management, Vertebrate Field Techniques, Population and Community Ecology, and other courses in the candidate’s area of specialty.

• Develop and deliver high-quality teaching and mentorship across courses in general biology, evolution, ecology, and specialized mammalogy-related topics; contribute to 2-4 lectures and/or lab courses per term.
• Establish and maintain an active program of research and scholarship with student-centered projects and fieldwork in California systems; opportunities include work with the Vertebrate Natural History Collection and existing Cal Poly lands and initiatives.
• Engage in service to the department and university, including committee participation, student advising, and building industry relationships.

• Ph.D. (or equivalent) in biology or a closely related field by the start date; demonstrated excellence in teaching and a productive research agenda in terrestrial mammalogy or related areas.
• Ability to teach a range of biology courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with enthusiasm for teaching diverse student populations.
• Strong potential for a productive, externally funded research program and collaboration within and beyond Cal Poly.
