Position: System Development Manager, ESCAPE

Description

The AmSec Endpoint Security Capabilities and Prevention Engineering team builds and operates first and third party services for monitoring and response to malicious activity on Amazon internal devices, collecting data from all parts of Amazon’s worldwide environment. We seek a System Development Manager excited about leading a talented team to solve challenging problems by developing our own solutions, while operating a mission‑critical service that protects Amazon and customer data.

The services we build are flexible, secure, scalable, high‑performance and robust tools that enable security engineers and analysts to detect anomalies and facilitate threat hunting.

In Amazon Security we operate multiple large‑scale data query platforms, and you will lead a group of engineers to operate these services to the highest operational level while building new tools and services to improve the customer experience and make it easier/faster/cheaper for the customer to get what they need. We obsess over our customers – trust is our first priority.

In this role you will lead a key software development team to deliver high‑quality, scalable products deployed to internal services worldwide, collaborating with product owners and customers, and working with stakeholders to define scalable solutions that satisfy a wide variety of security needs.

On‑Call Responsibility

This position involves on‑call responsibilities. We work to ensure our systems are fault tolerant. When paged, we resolve the root cause so we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.

Key job responsibilities

Drive the vision for the services and programs within the team while working with new and current customer requirements. Help the team understand priorities to meet organizational deliverables and timelines, and unblock engineers so they can meet their deliverables. Deliver amazing tools within Amazon Security that improve the security posture of the business while enabling Amazon Security Engineers to find the data they need.

day in the life

The team’s mission is to support Security teams by having a scalable and fault‑tolerant presentation layer for querying security data for troubleshooting and incident response. Most of the day involves working directly with the team to understand the status of tasks, prioritizing new tasks and features, unblocking issues, and working with customers to understand new requirements within the services, determining how these tasks can be prioritized within the team roadmap, and frequently meeting with organizational leaders and customers to discuss goals and status.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of systems engineering and operations leadership in an Internet service or leading‑edge IT organization.
  • 5+ years of managing system or software development teams.
  • 7+ years of relevant hands‑on systems engineering and administrative work in networking, storage systems, and operating systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).
  • Experience with Agile engineering practices (Kanban, continuous delivery, etc.).
  • Experience with AWS platforms, services, and design patterns.
