The County of San Luis Obispo is hiring a Water Systems Chemist to join our Water Quality Division within the Public Works Department. We are looking for motivated, independent professionals who are passionate about public service. The ideal candidate will possess:

• Experience in a certified environmental laboratory (TNI/ELAP preferred) and a strong understanding of regulatory compliance for drinking water and wastewater systems.
• Hands‑on field and analytical experience in water, wastewater, stormwater, or landfill monitoring.
• Team skills—able to guide, mentor, and promote a positive, collaborative team environment.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
• Technical expertise with advanced laboratory instruments (wet chemistry, ion chromatography, metals analysis, TOC).

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

All levels: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in chemistry, biology, bacteriology, chemical engineering, or a closely related field.

Water Systems Chemist I: No additional experience.

Water Systems Chemist II: Two years experience as a Water Systems Chemist I or an equivalent position.
