Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Police Lieutenant, this position will play a key security role across campus. Primarily stationed at the Robert

E. Kennedy Library, this position will be responsible for performing security rounds, maintaining communications with the Public Safety department, providing access control measures, and otherwise displaying a high level of professionalism and customer service while interacting with students, faculty, staff, and guests.

Department Summary

The mission of the Public Safety unit at Cal Poly is to foster a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Public Safety unit consists of four departments; the Cal Poly Police Department, the Department of Emergency Management, Public Safety Business Services, and Transportation and Parking Services, which work collaboratively to enhance the campus safety and readiness.

Qualifications
  • Ability to effectively use applicable safety related equipment and security systems and software as well as policies an procedure.
  • Knowledge of general procedures and regulations related to security and public safety.
  • Ability to detect and respond appropriately to potential hazards, safety emergencies, and/or crime situations and to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and de‑escalate non‑violent crisis situations.
  • Ability to observe and recall details and incidents.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent and possession of a California Driver’s License. Requires successful completion of a background check and physical exam. Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn how to use the applicable public safety related equipment and systems is required.
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Guard Card within 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of a California Driver’s License.
Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $53,736 - $58,164 per year

Classification Range: $41,532 - $60,516 per year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
