Purpose Statement

The job of Teacher
- Special Area (PE, Music, etc.) is to provide specialized, standards-based instruction in designated subject areas; adapt curriculum, materials, and instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs; support student academic and social growth; assess student progress; coordinate instructional and extracurricular activities; maintain a safe learning environment; maintain accurate records and documentation in compliance with district and regulatory requirements; collaborate with staff and families;

and participate in school-wide programs and professional development.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt specialized instructional activities and materials (e.g., physical education routines, music exercises, performance tasks) to accommodate diverse learning needs and support individualized education plans within established curriculum frameworks.
  • Administer a variety of subject-specific assessments (e.g., performance tasks, skills evaluations, written tests) to evaluate student competency, monitor progress, and inform instructional decisions.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and contribute to the school improvement plan.
  • Communicate with parents and/or legal guardians regarding student progress to share expectations and support student improvement and learning reinforcement.
  • Coordinate instructional and extracurricular activities (e.g., performances, field trips, competitions) to ensure timely availability of materials, equipment, and personnel for learning in specialized subject areas.
  • Demonstrate effective instructional methods and strategies for delivering specialized subject content, implementing curriculum and programs, and differentiating instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Manage student behavior in specialized instructional settings to maintain a safe, orderly learning environment and promote student success.
  • Monitor students in various environments (classroom, gym, playground, field trips, performances, labs) to ensure a positive learning environment and active participation.
  • Participate in meetings, professional development, workshops, conferences, and parent-teacher conferences to enhance instructional practices and contribute to school and district goals.
  • Prepare a variety of written materials (grades, attendance, notes, progress reports) to document student growth and communicate with families.
  • Provide guidance and support to students to improve academic performance and develop problem-solving skills in specialized subject areas and overall school performance.
  • Provide instruction and guided practice using adopted curriculum to improve student learning and interpersonal skills within a structured course of study.
  • Report incidents (mandated reporting, school processes) to maintain student safety and adhere to Education Code and school policy.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve issues and provide information or direction.
  • Support and collaborate with classroom teachers to enhance instructional practices and ensure alignment between special area instruction and general education.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient instructional activities and learning environments.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, prepare documents, and facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Knowledge of codes, policies, regulations, laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson planning; curriculum and instruction in subject areas; instructional strategies and assessment; technology integration; child development; classroom and behavioral management; and professional ethics.

Skills include operating standard office equipment, maintaining accurate records, differentiating instruction, applying the curriculum, using assessment data to inform instruction, managing behavior, ensuring safety, and communicating with students and parents.
