Under limited supervision, independently performs highly skilled and complex diagnosis, maintenance and repairs of a wide variety of diesel, gasoline and hydraulic powered vehicles (medium and light duty), including: generators, trucks, cars, police vehicles, fire apparatus and various types of construction equipment.

As the Mechanic, you will:
  • Perform operator-level inspection, servicing, and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform automated diagnoses of vehicle/equipment malfunctions.
  • Complete mechanical and electrical repair/maintenance of diesel/gasoline vehicles and equipment.
  • Overhaul and services engines, transmissions, brakes, air conditioning, etc.
  • Inspect, repair, patch, balance, and mount tires on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Repair heavy equipment such as backhoes, bobcats, fire trucks, graders, and sanitation trucks.
  • Service, charge, and maintain vehicle air conditioning units.
  • Research reference manuals concerning unusual or difficult repairs.
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Perform welding on City vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Store, handle, apply, and dispose of hazardous materials required in work assignments.
  • Advise supervisor of required parts, equipment, and supplies.
  • Load and unload supplies and lifts/moves heavy objects.
  • Wash engines, and suspensions.
  • Perform detail inspections, washing, buffing, waxing, vacuuming, and steaming vehicle interiors.
  • May perform porter duties, park vehicles and moving them from place to place.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and orderly conditions in the workplace.
  • Respond to emergency vehicle or equipment breakdowns in the field as required.
  • Manage the handling, application, and disposal of hazardous materials in strict compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace, including assisting with overall shop housekeeping duties.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, lead mechanics and supervisors to coordinate repairs and service activities.
  • Ensure compliance with local, states, and federal regulations regarding vehicle safety, emissions, and workplace safety standards.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to internal departments and personnel.
  • Collaborate with vendors to source, price, and order parts. Maintains professional, respectful, and ethical relationships with all vendors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Will posses the knowledge of:
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric-powered vehicles and equipment, including heavy machinery and public safety units.
  • Operation and repair of internal combustion engines, powertrains, suspensions, transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, and electronic diagnostics.
  • Proper use, handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, including knowledge of OSHA standards and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems, including lift gates, aerial booms, sanitation bodies, and other specialty components.
  • Air conditioning and climate control systems in automotive and heavy equipment applications.
  • Welding, cutting, and basic metal fabrication techniques used in repair and maintenance.
  • Hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical systems, including lift gates, aerial booms, sanitation bodies, and other specialty components.
  • Safe operation of a wide variety of hand and power tools, diagnostic scanners, lifts, jacks, cranes, and shop equipment.
  • Occupational hazards, safety rules, and best practices in a fleet maintenance shop environment.
