Position Description

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Texas State University invites applications for an open‑rank, tenure‑track position in Geographic Education to begin Fall 2026. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise master’s and Ph.D. students in our highly successful and fully online programs, maintain an active research agenda, secure external funding, and participate in departmental service activities.

Required Qualifications For All Ranks
  • A Ph.D. in Geography, Geography Education, Environmental Education, Social Studies Education, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
At the Assistant Professor Level
  • Demonstrated or potential record of peer‑reviewed publications in geography education.
  • Potential to develop a productive research agenda.
  • Potential to secure external funding.
  • Potential to teach courses at undergraduate and graduate levels on curriculum, instructional design, and professional development in geography or closely related fields.
At the Associate Professor Level
  • Record of peer‑reviewed publications in geography education commensurate with an associate professor in the department.
  • Record of securing external research funding commensurate with an associate professor in the department.
  • Record of teaching courses at undergraduate and graduate levels on curriculum, instructional design, and professional development in geography or closely related fields.
  • Record of advising graduate students commensurate with an associate professor in the department.
At the Professor Level
  • Outstanding record of peer‑reviewed publications in geography education commensurate with a full professor in the department.
  • Outstanding record of securing external research funding commensurate with a full professor in the department.
  • Record of teaching courses at undergraduate and graduate levels on curriculum, instructional design, and professional development in geography or closely related fields.
  • Record of advising doctoral students.
  • Evidence of an established reputation and service in geography education.
Preferred Qualifications For All Ranks
  • Experience with online instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with K‑12 educators.
At the Assistant Professor Level
  • Record of applying for or securing external research grants.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise graduate students.
At the Associate Professor Level
  • Same preferred qualifications as an assistant professor, plus: evidence of an active national and international network of professional geography education collaborators.
  • Evidence of service in geography education at the national and international levels.
At the Professor Level
  • Same preferred qualifications as an associate professor, plus: evidence of leadership in geography education at the national and international levels.
