DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONHead Start (HS) and Early Head Start (EHS) are federally funded programs serving low‑income children and their families. Services include education and developmental support for children ages 0‑3 (EHS) and 3‑5 (HS). The California State Preschool program serves children ages 3‑5.
DEFINITIONUnder direct supervision, responsible for planning, supervising, and implementing the education program in accordance with MAAC policies, procedures, state and federal regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Develop and implement lesson plans using the approved Creative Curriculum aligned with program goals.
- Utilize classroom materials and routines to create a learning environment appropriate to developmental levels, interests, and talents of children.
- Maintain a safe and healthy classroom environment.
- Implement discipline rules and practices that promote child development.
- Provide age‑appropriate activities promoting social, physical, cognitive, creative, and self‑concept development.
- Facilitate a continuous interactive process with families to strengthen family‑identified goals.
- Use classroom volunteers, aides, and parent volunteers effectively.
- Maintain and update written records and reports timely.
- Build open, friendly relationships with staff, volunteers, and parents.
- Conduct required home visits with primary caregivers.
- Recognize individual child differences and develop individualized plans.
- Inform families of community resources, provide referrals, and assist with service scheduling.
- Integrate other Head Start components into the curriculum.
- Provide client transportation as needed.
- Work on the Individual Family Plan at each phase and update at least three times during the school year.
- Lift, carry, and restrain children weighing 30‑50 pounds as needed.
- Provide personalized special services to special‑needs children (feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.).
- Mainstream special‑needs children into the classroom.
- Meet with parents of special‑needs children to discuss educational objectives and services.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of early childhood education, child development, and anti‑bias education.
- Knowledge of local educational and community resources for classroom use.
- Knowledge of bilingual language acquisition.
- Knowledge of Head Start policies and procedures desirable.
- Bilingual speaking, reading, and writing in English/Spanish preferred.
Lead Teacher I:
- Associate’s degree with emphasis in Early Childhood Education or Child Development and at least 12 units in ECE/CD.
- One year of experience in a child‑care setting.
Lead Teacher II:
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in Early Childhood Education or Child Development and at least 12 units in ECE/CD.
- One year of experience in a child‑care setting.
Additional requirements for both levels:
- Current State of California Child Development Teacher Level Permit, Child Development Associate credential, or a classroom teaching credential for elementary or single subject in home economics.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Valid CPR, First Aid, and Food Handlers certifications within two months of hire, maintained thereafter.
