Hip-Hop Dance and History (Fall 2026)

The Dance Studies Program at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach DNCE 204:
Hip Hop History & Dance. The course meets on Mondays & Wednesdays from 12:30-2:20 pm and is both lecture/theory and lab/studio practice. The course satisfies Lower Division General Education credit and appeals to a broad student body.

DNCE 204 explores Hip Hop dance history and form, focusing on Hip Hop dance fundamentals primarily breaking, popping, locking, house, and commercial Hip Hop. Examines Hip Hop dance as a social movement and how dances influence racial justice. Introduces technical dance skills such as phrasing, musical rhythms, and free styling through class participation. Applies professional skills used to advance in the arts industry such as working with video.

Incorporates viewing, attending, and participating in performances.

The Dance Studies Program at CSUSM is committed to offering students an experiential understanding of contemporary movement practices and performance within an artistic, political, social, and historical context. Dance Studies will hire an instructor committed to cultural intelligence, inclusivity, and imparting dance activism in a non-competitive atmosphere.

The lecturer for this course should be knowledgeable of Afro-diasporic dance forms, street dance lineage, and culture. They should demonstrate scholarly, creative, or professional contributions to hip hop dance and culture; expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy and interdisciplinary teaching; and evidence of curriculum development in dance studies or hip hop-related courses.

The University is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in dance, dance or performance studies, or related field; OR at least 10 years substantial professional experience in hip hop performance, choreography, or related industry practice and 5 years teaching experience in hip hop dance (higher education, studio, or community settings).
  • Per the California State University's Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in dance, dance or performance studies, or related field
  • Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate intercultural competence and a commitment to serving our campus community as it relates to teaching and, as applicable, service.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $8,000 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer A - AY: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer B - AY: $6,221 - $13,224 per full-time month
