The City of San Marcos is currently hiring for a Maintenance Worker I/II (DOQ) position to support the Public Works Facilities Division.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of manual, skilled, or semi-skilled duties related to public works construction, maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities, maintenance and repair of city streets and sidewalks, municipal parks, rights-of-way, drainage systems, traffic signing and striping, and other public improvements; operates power driven equipment.
Maintenance Worker I/II positions are assigned to various divisions within the Public Works Department:
* Facilities:
Maintenance related to the City facilities.
* Parks:
Maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, maintenance and inspection of municipal parks, landscape construction, recreation facilities, rights-of-way, medians, easements, and other public improvements.
* Street Maintenance:
Maintenance and repair of City streets and sidewalks, drainage systems, traffic signing and striping, traffic signals, lighting and other public improvements.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
* Performs a wide variety of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled construction and maintenance work, including digging trenches, placing and finishing concrete, loading and unloading vehicles, moving materials and equipment, litter abatement, and painting.
* Operates motor-driven equipment and trucks on streets, highways, and over terrain; operates hand and portable power tools.
* Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment; performs minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment; cleans, maintains, and stores equipment.
* Cleans and maintains restrooms and park structures.
* Repair or replace restroom fixtures, lighting, etc.
* Uses chemicals and/or other supplies.
* Maintains simple records; reads and interprets directions and sketches.
* Provides and participates in emergency responses, which, while not all-inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc.
* Routinely operates the following light and medium power-driven equipment: aerial lift, air compressor and other miscellaneous tools. Performs other related work as required.
Some examples of specific divisional duties are outlined below:
* Facilities Maintenance:
Performs a variety of trade jobs in the construction and maintenance of buildings and facilities including painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, hardware, finishes, and custodial disciplines.
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
Tools, equipment, materials, and techniques used in construction and building maintenance; general construction and maintenance procedures and methods; safe working practices; use of hazardous chemicals common to construction and maintenance activities; principles of customer service; operation and preventive maintenance procedures of power and other equipment relative to construction and maintenance; basic electrical principles; general understanding of the California Vehicle Code.
* Facilities Maintenance:
Building systems, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), operations, materials and practices; current methods, terminology, equipment, tools and materials used in the maintenance and operation of facilities.
Ability to:
Perform strenuous physical work with agility and endurance; work in cooperative manner with others and contribute to a successful team effort; use and properly operate assigned tools and equipment; operate assigned trucks and equipment, observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and follow oral and written instructions; read, write, speak, and understand English in order to communicate with fellow employees and the public and to follow safety precautions and procedures;
demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community; and establish and maintain effective working relationships and contribute to a cooperative team effort.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training
Education equivalent to GED and specialized vocational training program courses in maintenance fundamentals and/or other related maintenance course work.
Experience
6 months of increasingly responsible experience related to maintenance and repair.
