Purpose:

The Band Technical Assistant will assist the SMHS Band Directors with their instructional duties in regards to the Rattler Marching Band during the Fall semester.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • UIL RMA Portal Certificate of Completion

Experience:

  • A background in high school marching band performance
  • A background in college marching band performance
  • Experience in high school marching band preferred
  • Experience in college marching, drum corps, or color guard preferred

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Capacity to follow marching drill design
  • Ability to evaluate student performance and assist in improving individual and group skills
  • Strong organizational skills, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to recognize mistakes in movement and sound and demonstrate methods of instruction to cause improvement through student understanding

Job Description:

  • Ensure communication with the Band Director and the other staff members to develop movement to meet the drill requirements
  • Attend all rehearsals and performances, instruct members in fundamental and advanced techniques as needed
  • Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with the Marching Band Director
  • Schedule and conduct extra rehearsals for the unit, in addition to the scheduled marching band rehearsals as needed
  • Provide technical instruction to students participating in SMCISD marching band
  • Assist the staff at extracurricular events, events (including but not limited to: football games, parades, and UIL activities)
  • Work within schedules of band classes and before/after school schedules as assigned by the campus band director
  • Follow guidelines established by SMCISD as well as federal and state law pertaining to band
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students
  • Communicate with the band directors to insure coordination of instruction
  • Establish and maintain open communication with district staff, band directors, parents, and students
  • Maintain professional relationships with district staff, colleagues, band directors, parents, and students
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Maintain high expectations for the level of performance from band members during the warm-ups and give attention to individual members
  • Make sure the band is prepared/equipped for rehearsals and performances
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other staff
  • Tools/Equipment Used: instruments, platforms, and audio equipment
  • Posture:
    Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, etc.
  • Motion:
    Repetitive hand/arm motions, frequent hand gripping, reaching, bending, etc.
  • Lifting:
    Occasional light to medium lifting and carrying (less than 40 pounds)
  • Environment:
    Frequent outdoor exposure, prolonged travel
  • Mental Demands:
    Maintain emotional control under stress;
    Work with frequent interruptions, ability to communicate; ability to instruct
  • May not exceed 20 hours of work each week
  • Must clock in and out for hours worked
