Academic Advisor I - Liberal Arts Advising
Responsible for providing quality academic advising to current and prospective undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University.
The Academic Advisor I, under supervision of a director, provides quality academic advising to new, continuing, and returning undergraduate students at Texas State University. The Academic Advisor I also provides appropriate advising guidance and referrals for prospective and visiting students.
Job duties include providing accurate and consistent information about major, degree requirements, and progress toward graduation; clearly explaining complex information related to institutional policies and procedures; coordinating, planning, and preparing for advising sessions; engaging with undergraduate students in-person, virtually, and over the phone; helping undergraduate students define and develop realistic educational and career goals; maintaining confidential student records through accurate and thorough documentation;
reviewing graduation applications and certifying students' eligibility for graduation; maintaining collaborative relationships with academic units and university partners; acknowledging and researching student concerns, collaborating with appropriate stakeholders, and advocating for solutions with a commitment to fairness and integrity; referring undergraduate students to appropriate resources for assistance; participating in university efforts toward recruitment and retention such as Bobcat Day and New Student Orientation;
providing recommendations for continuous improvement of advising services and integrating practices aimed at improving the student experience; committing to ongoing professional development and attainment of knowledge regarding industry advancements and best practices in academic advising; providing clerical assistance as needed; and completing work at the request of other campus offices to support processes related to compliance and/or student degree progress.
Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree, experience working with college students or children/adolescents in a professional or volunteer capacity, exceptional attention to detail, exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills, knowledge of, or the ability to learn, academic policies and procedures, knowledge of, or the ability to learn, Banner 9, Degree Works, and other software essential to academic advising, ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, ability to maintain focus in a fast-paced environment, and ability to maintain a professional demeanor, including tact, discretion, and exceptional customer service in all aspects of the position.
Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in a Liberal Arts/Social Science discipline, experience working in a college academic advising center, academic department, or other area of student/academic support, and ability to read, write, and speak Spanish fluently.
