Position Description

The Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education, and School Psychology (CLAS) in the College of Education at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution located in San Marcos, Texas, invites applications for an assistant professor of instruction position of Professional Counseling beginning August 2026. This position involves teaching, service, and program support in a vibrant master’s program in Central Texas. Specific responsibilities include teaching courses in Professional Counseling and providing service to the program, department, university, and profession.

Program:
The Professional Counseling Program is CACREP‑accredited in three specialty areas:
Clinical Mental Health Counseling;
Marriage, Couple, Family Counseling; and School Counseling. This position will include teaching core courses in our counseling program, with a particular focus on teaching psychopathology, introduction to addictions, advanced ethics, and other courses in the CACREP core as needed.

Department:
The CLAS Department serves approximately 1,294 students seeking undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Professional Counseling (COUN), Educational and Community Leadership (EDCL), Adult, Professional, and Community Education (APCE), School Psychology (SPSY), Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE), and Integrated Studies (INTS). The CLAS Department provides high quality undergraduate and graduate education to promote significant transformational changes in communities, schools, organizations, and institutions locally and globally.

University:
Founded in 1899 as a small teaching college, Texas State University is now home to over 40,000 students. The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University‑High Research Activity (R2) and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain Doctoral University‑Very High Research Activity (R1) by 2027.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in Counselor Education by the employment date of August 2026.
  • A professional clinical license (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor [ LPC ], Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist [ LMFT ]) or a provisional clinical license (e.g., LPC Associate, LMFT Associate) with a plan in place to complete the professional license in the State of Texas within two years.
  • Demonstrated record of clinical training and experience in clinical mental health counseling or marriage, couple, and family counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching core courses in a CACREP‑accredited program in the teaching areas listed above.
  • Designation as a clinical supervisor (e.g., LPC‑S, LMFT‑S) and experience providing clinical supervision in an academic and/or clinical setting.
  • Demonstration of professional service to the profession.
